Porcelain Veneers are one of the most
beautiful and conservative treatment options
we have to offer patients.
This photographic journal will walk you thru
the treatment process for a porcelain veneer
case treated by Dr. Stephen Phelan and
illustrate some additional cases treated in
our office.
The first step to create an excellent esthetic
result is to have a complete exam along with
the necessary diagnostic records. These
records may include models and bite records
of your teeth as well as a detailed series of
digital photographs. It is also very important
to have a discussion with Dr. Phelan and
explain the goals and desires you have for
your new smile.
The master dental ceramist will take all the
records and information from Dr. Phelan and
create the smile you desire in wax on your
models. This diagnostic wax-up is then used
as a guide to prepare your teeth for the
porcelain veneers as conservatively as
possible and to create the prototype or
temporary restorations.
The tooth preparations are completed with
the aid of a putty matrix guide created from
the diagnostic wax-up. The teeth are usually
prepared so that only a very small amount of
enamel is removed to create room for your
veneers and prevent your veneers from
becoming too bulky looking. In most cases
we only remove 0.5 mm of enamel.
The prototype or temporary restorations are
created to test out your new smile before it
is crafted in porcelain. The prototypes are
created using the diagnostic wax-up and Dr.
Phelan likes you to try them out for a few
days before we send the final approval to the
master dental ceramist to use these as a
guide for the final porcelain veneers.
The master dental ceramist will custom craft
your porcelain veneers on the models of your
tooth preparations. These porcelain veneers
are created using the prototype restorations
as a guide and will improve the esthetics
created by them. Notice all the detail that
has been created in porcelain including the
small amount of translucency on the edge of
the veneers to make them look more natural.
The custom crafted porcelain veneers are precisely bonded to your teeth by Dr. Phelan using a dental microscope. It is very important to have the veneers and any bonded cement carefully cleaned and finished using the microscope so that gum tissue will respond favorably and have excellent tissue health.
